Nilu Ghorbani is a contemporary artist and architect based in Düsseldorf, Germany, working across watercolor painting, mixed media, 3D-printed hand-painted PLA objects, monoprint bookbinding (Kunsthalle Düsseldorf), and live drawing performances (Universität der Künste Berlin / UdK Berlin). Exhibited at Kunstpunkte Düsseldorf 2026.
I am an artist based in Düsseldorf with a background in architecture.
My practice begins with curiosity. I develop visual stories through painting, material experimentation, and research, allowing each idea to find the form that best tells its story. Influenced by architectural thinking, I work across different mediums and embrace experimentation as an essential part of my creative process.
I believe stories don't belong to one medium. They can become paintings, objects, installations, or something we carry with us every day. For me, the studio is a place to explore, question, and discover—where every project is an opportunity to learn something new.

Watercolor · 2026
Exhibited at Kunstpunkte Düsseldorf, 2026 Fragments of Home explores identity, memory and belonging after migration. The works bring together fragile watercolor figures with fragments of Persian carpet patterns — elements connected to memory, culture and a sense of home. The carpet fragments become traces of something familiar carried with us, even when the place we once called home feels distant. Through watercolor and fragmented patterns, the figures move between familiarity and uncertainty, reflecting the experience of carrying parts of where we come from while creating a sense of belonging somewhere new.

Charcoal on paper · 2025
Tracing the Surface explores the act of drawing as a form of physical encounter. During a live performance in the garden of the Universität der Künste Berlin, sheets of paper were wrapped around tree trunks and marked with charcoal, allowing the textures of the bark to emerge through touch. The work extends beyond the drawing itself. Sound recordings of charcoal rubbing against wood, the movement of the wind, and the surrounding environment become part of the piece, documenting a moment in which the paper gradually absorbs the character of its surroundings. The resulting traces are not only images, but records of contact, time, and presence.
